Wherefore his servantssaidunto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a youngvirgin: and let her standbefore the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hastthoudone so? and he also was a verygoodly man; and his motherbare him afterAbsalom.
But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men whichbelonged to David, were not withAdonijah.
And Adonijahslewsheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by Enrogel, and called all his brethren the king’ssons, and all the men of Judah the king’sservants:
WhereforeNathanspakeuntoBathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hastthou not heardthatAdonijah the son of Haggithdothreign, and David our lordknoweth it not?
Go and get thee in untokingDavid, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swearuntothinehandmaid, saying, AssuredlySolomon thy son shallreignafter me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why thendothAdonijahreign?
And she saidunto him, My lord, thouswarest by the LORD thy God untothinehandmaid, saying, AssuredlySolomon thy son shallreignafter me, and he shall sit upon my throne.
And he hathslainoxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hathcalled all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servanthath he not called.
And theytold the king, saying, BeholdNathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowedhimselfbefore the kingwith his face to the ground.
For he is gonedownthis day, and hathslainoxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hathcalled all the king’ssons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drinkbefore him, and say, God savekingAdonijah.
Even as I swareuntothee by the LORD God of Israel, saying, AssuredlySolomon thy son shallreignafter me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
Then ye shallcome up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I haveappointed him to be ruleroverIsrael and overJudah.
So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, wentdown, and causedSolomon to rideuponkingDavid’smule, and brought him to Gihon.
And Zadok the priesttook an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointedSolomon. And theyblew the trumpet; and all the peoplesaid, God savekingSolomon.
And Adonijah and all the gueststhatwerewith him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And whenJoabheard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is thisnoise of the citybeing in an uproar?
And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priestcame: and Adonijahsaidunto him, Come in; for thou art a valiant man, and bringestgoodtidings.
And the kinghathsentwith him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and theyhavecaused him to rideupon the king’smule:
And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophethaveanointed him king in Gihon: and they are come up fromthencerejoicing, so that the cityrangagain. This is the noisethat ye haveheard.
And moreover the king’sservantscame to bless our lordkingDavid, saying, God make the name of Solomonbetterthan thy name, and make his thronegreaterthan thy throne. And the kingbowedhimselfupon the bed.
And it was toldSolomon, saying, Behold, AdonijahfearethkingSolomon: for, lo, he hathcaughthold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let kingSolomonswearunto me to day that he will not slay his servantwith the sword.
And Solomonsaid, If he willshewhimself a worthy man, thereshall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickednessshall be found in him, he shall die.
