And he stood and criedunto the armies of Israel, and saiduntothem, Why are ye come out to set yourbattle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him comedown to me.
And Davidrose up early in the morning, and left the sheepwith a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was goingforth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.
And the men of Israelsaid, Have ye seenthis man that is come up? surely to defyIsrael is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the kingwillenrich him withgreatriches, and willgive him his daughter, and make his father’shousefree in Israel.
And Davidspake to the men thatstood by him, saying, Whatshall be done to the man thatkilleththisPhilistine, and takethaway the reproachfromIsrael? for who is thisuncircumcisedPhilistine, that he shoulddefy the armies of the living God?
And Eliab his eldestbrotherheardwhen he spakeunto the men; and Eliab’sanger was kindledagainstDavid, and he said, Why camestthoudownhither? and withwhomhastthouleftthose few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thineheart; for thou art comedownthatthoumightest see the battle.
Davidsaidmoreover, The LORDthatdelivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he willdeliver me out of the hand of thisPhilistine. And SaulsaiduntoDavid, Go, and the LORD be withthee.
And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him fivesmoothstones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drewnear to the Philistine.
ThensaidDavid to the Philistine, Thoucomest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whomthouhastdefied.
This day will the LORDdelivertheeintominehand; and I willsmitethee, and takethineheadfromthee; and I willgive the carcases of the host of the Philistinesthis day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wildbeasts of the earth; that all the earth may knowthatthere is a God in Israel.
ThereforeDavid ran, and stoodupon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheaththereof, and slew him, and cut off his headtherewith. And when the Philistines saw theirchampion was dead, theyfled.
And the men of Israel and of Judaharose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, untilthoucome to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistinesfelldown by the way to Shaaraim, evenuntoGath, and untoEkron.
