But Jonahrose up to fleeuntoTarshishfrom the presence of the LORD, and wentdown to Joppa; and he found a shipgoing to Tarshish: so he paid the farethereof, and wentdowninto it, to go withthemuntoTarshishfrom the presence of the LORD.
Then the marinerswereafraid, and criedevery man unto his god, and castforth the waresthatwere in the shipinto the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gonedowninto the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fastasleep.
So the shipmastercame to him, and saidunto him, Whatmeanestthou, O sleeper? arise, callupon thy God, if so be that God willthinkupon us, that we perish not.
And theysaidevery one to his fellow, Come, and let us castlots, that we may know for whosecausethisevil is upon us. So theycastlots, and the lot felluponJonah.
Thensaidtheyunto him, Tell us, we praythee, for whosecausethisevil is upon us; What is thineoccupation? and whencecomestthou? what is thy country? and of whatpeople art thou?
Thenwere the men exceedinglyafraid, and saidunto him, Why hastthoudonethis? For the men knewthat he fledfrom the presence of the LORD, because he had toldthem.
And he saiduntothem, Take me up, and cast me forthinto the sea; so shall the sea be calmunto you: for I knowthat for my sakethisgreattempest is upon you.
Whereforetheycriedunto the LORD, and said, We beseechthee, O LORD, we beseechthee, let us not perish for thisman’slife, and lay not upon us innocentblood: for thou, O LORD, hastdone as it pleasedthee.
